“Cro Cop” vs. Nelson Confirmed, Hamill Replaces Matyushenko

By FCF Staff

A busy week of bout confirmations and injury updates has continued today, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced that heavyweight Roy Nelson will meet Pride vet Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (pictured) at the promotion’s upcoming October 29th event in Las Vegas.

According to a news post on the official UFC site, Nelson and Filipovic have verbally agreed to the UFC 137 bout, which will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Nelson (15-6) will be looking to rebound from back-to-back losses to Junior dos Santos and most recently Frank Mir, who earned a unanimous decision victory over him at UFC 130 in May.

“Cro Cop” (27-9-2) is coming off knockout losses to the aforementioned Mir and most recently Brendan Schaub, who stopped the accomplished striker at UFC 128 in March.

The UFC has also announced today that Vladimir Matyushenko will not fight Alexander Gustafsson as scheduled on August 6th due to an injury. Stepping in as his replacement for the UFC 133 tilt will be Matt Hamill.

Hamill (10-3) last competed in May when he lost by unanimous decision to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 130. Prior to that, at UFC 121 in October, the former TUF competitor scored a UD win over Tito Ortiz.

Gustafsson (11-1) hasn’t fought since February when he submitted James Te Huna in the first round at UFC 127 , to extend his Octagon record to 3-1.

UFC 133 will be hosted by the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
