UFC 249: Edson Barboza Believes Tony Ferguson Has Advantage Over Khabib Nurmagomedov
By FCF Staff
Khabib Nurmagomedov is the favorite to retain the lightweight title when he faces Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. But, former lightweight contender, Edson Barboza, believes “El Cucuy” has the advantage heading into the highly anticipated fight.
Nurmagomedov is scheduled to fight Ferguson on April 18th, and while many believe it could be his toughest test to date, the challenger’s the underdog heading into the contest. Recently Barboza spoke with Helen Yee, and when asked who he thinks has the advantage for the fight, the vaunted striker said this (quote via MMA Junkie):
“I think Ferguson has a little advantage because he’s a little bit better striker,” Barboza said. “He’s a little bit more creative. Everybody knows what Khabib is doing, but he’s doing it very well. Everybody knows, but nobody can stop it. But I feel Ferguson has a little bit (of an edge) because he’s more creative – you never know what’s coming.
“Both guys are super powerful, but I think Khabib is more powerful, especially on the ground. He’s a little bit stronger. But some things, Khabib is better, some things Tony Ferguson is better. That’s what makes the match very exciting.”
Barboza has fought both Ferguson and Nurmagomedov. In 2015, he was submitted by Ferguson in the second round, and in 2017, he lost to Nurmagomedov via decision.
More recently, the 34-year-old Barboza (20-8) announced he’s dropping to featherweight.
