Ian Machado Garry had to battle through a late onslaught from Carlos Prates in the headliner of UFC Kansas City. But, the outspoken welterweight outscored the feared striker throughout the majority of the fight, en route to a unanimous decision win.

For most of the bout, Garry countered Prates’ pressure effectively with kicks, punches, and takedown attempts, and was awarded the fight by all three judges. After the fight, UFC CEO Dana White confirmed Garry will be an alternate for the May 10 bout between welterweight champ Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena.

With the win, Garry moved his overall record to 16-1. Prates saw his record drop to 21 – 7.

Saturday’s event also marked the retirement of former light-heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith, who was stopped by Zhang Mingyang in the first round. Smith concludes his career with a record of 38-22. Mingyang moved his record to 19-6 with the victory.
