Press release from Sheldon Marr November 11-12, 2000 Lamia, Greece U.S.A. WINS THE 2000 WORLD PANKRATION CHAMPIONSHIPS Team USA was able to win more individual medals than any other country in the individual (kilo) divisions at the 2000 World Pankration Championships. They then went on to a first place finish in the Men’s (3 man) Team Competition, and a second place finish in the Women’s Team Competition.: The Event attracted talented Martial Artists from all over the world, including a few well known No Holds Barred (NHB) Fighters including: Men’s Individual results:

Team Competition: Nine Countries competed in the Men’s (3 man) team competition, They were Australia. Canada, Greece, Israel. Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Spain & USA. Team USA was represented by Justin Ellison, Craig Pumphrey and (alternate) Brian Burns. Team USA met Israel in the first round, and shut them out (2 of 2), with win’s from Ellison and Burns. They then went on to beat Mexico (2 of 3) in the semi finals with wins from Pumphrey and Ellison, which qualified them to meet Greece in the Team Finals. Greece brought in a fresh Team (none of which competed in the kilo classes) to compete in the Men’s Team Tournament. They were very tough, but Team USA was able to shut them out (2 of 2) to win the Championship with wins coming from Pumphrey and Ellison. 1st USA Only USA and Canada chose to compete in the Women’s Team Competition, and Canada was able to defeat Team USA for the title. Team USA was represented by Sarah Chance, Catalina Chavez and (alternate) Claudia Schlesinger. 1st Canada Team USA was coached by Keith Hackney, Sheldon Marr and Olympic Wrestling Champion Mark Schultz. |

Tuesday, November 21 — Evan Tanner will continue to wear two hats at the USWF’s "Battle of the Belts" shootwrestling show this Saturday, November 25, in Amarillo, Texas, as he is both the promoter and the USWF heavyweight champ. Evan tells us all about this today, including comments on his title defense against "Iron Man" Travis Fulton. We also speak to Dan Severn and Becky Levi about this Saturday’s Danger Zone mixed martial arts show. Wednesday, November 22 — Renzo Gracie and his brother Ryan join us in the studio today, as they discuss Ryan’s upcoming fight in Pride on December 23 against Kazushi Sakuraba, as well as what is happening in the worlds of mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Thursday, November 23 — Today is Thanksgiving Day in America, so we will be replaying the show of Thursday, November 9 — Journalist and cultural critic Adisa Banjoko is at it again, with two new current articles in "Honey" and "Blu" magazines. Today Adisa expands on his views on the relationships between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, mixed martial arts, and hip hop music. Also, Jason Godsey is involved in promoting the "Circle City Challenge" mixed martial arts show in Indianapolis, Indiana. Today Jason discusses this show, as well as expounding on the state of mixed martial arts and the political climate in America. Friday, November 24 — We are also closed today for Thanksgiving, so we will replay the show of October 31 — We started with a prefight interview with Emanuel Steward, Lennox Lewis’s trainer, about the Lennox Lewis-David Tua heavyweight championship fight. We also had some comments from veteran boxing writer Bert Sugar. We also spoke at length with Japanese NHB journalist Tadashi Tanaka about the Pride and Pancrase mixed martial arts cards held in Japan on October 31, and the issue of promoters that hold worked or fixed fights and bill them as real, mixed martial arts fights. |
