Shane Burgos needed the judges’ scorecards to get past perennial, featherweight contender Cub Swanson on Saturday, but the rising fighter believes his gameplan was on point at UFC Ottawa.

Burgos faced the veteran fighter on the event’s main card, and he outstruck Swanson by a 147 to 132 margin. After the bout, Burgos was announced as the victor, but surprisingly, one judge had scored the bout 30-27 for Swanson. While discussing the victor after the card, Burgos had this to say about his strategy for the fight (quote via MMA Junkie):

“Gameplan went perfect,” Burgos said. “I wanted to use my jab, stay patient, not get overzealous. In my last fight, I got a little bit overzealous, went for a big shot and got caught. I wanted to stick to the jab and show different facets of my game, show I’m not just a brawler, just come forward and just use my hands. I wanted to use my hands, use my jab, use my length, use my kicks, which I haven’t really showed at all in my fights. I feel like I showed it tonight, use my switch stances; it was good tonight.”

With the win, the 28-year-old Burgos extended his overall record to 12-1, and his UFC record now stands at 5-1. The 35-year-old Swanson, meanwhile, has lost four in a row and his record is now 25-11.
