Tony Ferguson Says Conor McGregor’s “Irrelevant”, Will Wait For Title Shot

Tony Ferguson

Recently Conor McGregor mentioned Tony Ferguson is one of the fighters he’s interested in facing next. But, the UFC’s former interim lightweight champ has been quick to shoot down the bout.

Ferguson (25-3) is coming off a TKO win (via doctor stoppage) over Donald Cerrone, and has now won 12 straight fights. In a recent interview with ESPN, Ferguson was asked about McGregor’s comments, and the 35-year-old said this (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“He’s not my concern,” Ferguson said. “He’s like a female, like one of those ex-girlfriends. I stopped worrying about that. At first he was in line, trying to go for the title, then once he became irrelevant, I stopped caring about the dude. Now he’s mentioning my name? Get the f*ck out of here.”

“If push comes to shove, and then we need to,” Ferguson said. “I see him fighting the loser of this next fight this weekend. If you want to keep up with the rankings, we have to do it the right way. . . So me, if I fight for the title next he’s got to fight for the underdog. If he wins, you what, maybe I’ll give him a shot.”

Ferguson also said that he’s waiting for a title shot, and that he hopes to fight the winner of this Saturday’s bout between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and interim champ Dustin Poirier in December.
