After Victorious UFC Debut Gegard Mousasi Likely Headed For Surgery, Says “95%” Fighters Wouldn’t Have Competed With Injury

By FCF Staff

While Ilir Latifi relayed that the short notice and a dramatic weight cut limited his abilities in his UFC on FUEL TV 9 bout with Gegard Mousasi, the latter is also reporting that he was injured heading into the fight.

UFC President Dana White revealed at the post-fight press conference that Mousasi was dealing with “knee problems” throughout his recent camp, and that while he was cleared to compete in Stockholm, the light-heavyweight will reportedly need surgery.

Mousasi also confirmed that he was injured; however, the former Strikeforce champ did not care to discuss the details, other than to say that it’s “nothing small.” The highly regarded fighter also stated that “95% of fighters” wouldn’t have competed if they had been in his condition.

Mousasi outscored Latifi on his feet to record a unanimous decision win at Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 9 card. Latifi took the bout on just a few days notice, after his training partner Alexander Gustafsson was cut during training last week and was not cleared to fight.

Mousasi was also making his UFC debut and has now won four straight fights.
