Alexander Volkov is about to face one of the most explosive wrestlers in the UFC’s heavyweight division in Curtis Blaydes. But, Volkov and his coach sound confident that he’s more than ready to deal with Blaydes’ takedowns.

The heavyweights are going to fight in the headliner of the UFC’s latest event on Saturday, which will take place at the Apex Facility in Las Vegas. While talking with MMA Junkie recently, Volkov was asked about the wrestling component to the fight, and he had this to say.

“I used to fight with guys who want to wrestle me all my career,” Volkov said. “All people try to take me down to do something on the ground. I’m really used to it, and of course I know how to work with it. I always work on my wrestling.”

For years now, the noted striker has worked with wrestling coach, Kenny Johnson. While talking about the upcoming fight, Johnson said this.

“It’s not so much focusing, ‘OK, I’m fighting a wrestler. We’ve got to focus on wrestling,’” Johnson explained. “He comes from Russia. He has a lot of very good, very big wrestling partners. Throughout his career, everybody has wanted to put him down because he’s such a good striker, so we’ve been focused on technical pieces, but always keeping his skills in striking sharp, his jiu-jitsu and his wrestling.”

Volkov (31-7) is coming off a decision win over Greg Hardy in November and has gone 4-1 in his last five fights.

Blaydes (13-2), on the other hand, stopped Junior dos Santos in January and he’s also 4-1 in his last five outings.
