Alistair Overeem Granted License by NSAC, UFC 156 Bout With Antonio Silva Set

Overeem throwing Brett Rogers

By FCF Staff

Alistair Overeem has cleared the licensing hurdle to his second Octagon appearance, as the Nevada State Athletic Commission has granted the former Strikeforce and DREAM champion a license to compete in the state. As a result, Overeem is cleared to fight Antonio “Big Foot” Silva at UFC 156 on February 2nd, which will be hosted by the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer has confirmed to Full Contact Fighter that Overeem has indeed received his license, after the fighter appeared in front of the organization today.

Overeem (36-11-1) was denied a license last spring by the NSAC, after the heavyweight tested positive for an elevated testosterone / epitestostereone ratio, prior to a planned bout with Junior dos Santos. As a result, Overeem has not competed since December, 2011, when he stopped Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.

According to multiple reports, it was also revealed at today’s NSAC hearing that since he was denied a license last year, Overeem has voluntarily submitted five drug tests to the commission. All of the tests came back negative.

Silva (17-4) is coming off a first round stoppage victory over Travis Browne in October, after losing back-to-back bouts to Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez.
