Alistair Overeem Would be “Honored” to Fight Jon Jones

Overeem

Until recently, a fight between Jon Jones and Alistair Overeem didn’t seem like a possibility. But now that Jones is moving to heavyweight, the match-up could happen, and Overeem would be “honored” to fight his former teammate.

Recently Jones announced that he’s vacating the UFC’s light heavyweight title and that he’s moving up to heavyweight. In advance of Overeem’s (46-18) fight this Saturday with Augusto Sakai (15-1), the decorated heavyweight was asked if he’d be interested in fighting Jones (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“Yes, I would do it,” Overeem said. “I think it would be a great fight, and I would feel honored.”

“I think he’s a great addition to the heavyweight division,” Overeem said. “I’m actually excited. It’s fresh blood. I’ve trained with him. He’s very capable, he’s tough, he’s good, so I’m excited about that development.”

Jones and Overeem trained together when “The Reem” was part of the Jackson-Wink MMA team in New Mexico. Overeem has since moved his camp to Team Elevation in Denver.

Due to Jones’ storied run at light heavyweight, UFC President Dana White has said “Bones” could fight for the title in his first, heavyweight bout.

Overeem – Sakai will headline UFC Vegas 9, which will be hosted by the Apex Facility in Las Vegas.
