Anderson Silva Dominates Yushin Okami , “Shogun” Rua Avenges Loss to Forrest Griffin

By FCF Staff

Anderson Silva added another memorable chapter to his storied career tonight in Rio de Janeiro, as the UFC Middleweight Champion had few difficulties in disposing of imposing contender Yushin Okami in front of his Brazilian fans.

After an opening round that saw Silva study his opponent and negate Okami’s takedown attempts from the clinch, the champion came out more aggressively in the second frame and began to open fire.

Reminiscent of his August, 2009 bout with Forrest Griffin, Silva provoked Okami’s attacks by leaving his hands down beside his hips, and proceeded to drop the Japanese fighter with a pounding counter punch.

Although Okami managed to recover, moments later he found himself in a similar predicament due to another lightning quick strike from Silva, but this time the middleweight was unable to survive the champion’s follow up punches.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua avenged his 2007 loss to Griffin in impressive fashion, as the former Pride star stopped his fellow former champion early in round one with a barrage of vicious strikes.

Rua looked extremely comfortable from the onset of the bout and threatened Griffin with well timed counter punches. After a grazing strike sent Griffin stumbling to the mat, Rua followed up with a pounding series of hammer fists to Griffin’s head that forced the referee’s intervention.

And in another main card bout that gave Brazilian fans cause for celebration at the HSBC Arena, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira shrugged off several telling blows from Brendan Schaub to knockout the heavyweight at the 3:09 mark.

Despite the fact that Schaub managed to negate Nogueira’s takedown attempts early on and landed a couple of hard punches to his opponent, the legendary fighter continued to press forward and eventually caught Schaub with a stunning right, left punch combination.

As Schaub crumpled to the mat, Nogueira swarmed in for the finish and entrenched his 33rd pro victory with several more follow up punches.
