The war of words between Ilia Topuria and Arman Tsarukyan is heating up, even though it seems unlikely the two will battle in the near future.

Since Topuria won the UFC’s lightweight title last month, by taking out Charles Oliveira, he’s made it clear he doesn’t believe Tsarukyan should receive a title shot next. Topuria has repeated his criticisms of Tsarukyan for withdrawing from a scheduled bout with Islam Makhachev on very short notice in January.

In addition, recently Topuria told The Nelk Boys he would refuse to fight Tsarukyan next, because he hasn’t competed since withdrawing from UFC 311. UFC CEO Dana White has said the Armenian contender will need to record a win, before he gets booked for another title shot.

Following Topuria’s most recent comments, Tsarukyan reportedly responded with the following via social media.

“Imagine calling yourself a champion, but you’re already looking for a way out. You can vacate it or I’ll take it. Either way, it’s mine.”

The 28-year-old Tsarukyan (22-3) hasn’t competed since April, 2024, when he recorded a split decision victory over Charles Oliveira. That victory extended his winning streak to four.

Currently, Tsarukyan is ranked #2 in the UFC’s lightweight division. Makhachev, who vacated the title a few weeks ago to pursue a run at welterweight, is ranked #1.
