B.J. Penn Hopes To Test Rory MacDonald’s Cardio

Penn

By Michael Hatamoto

BJ Penn will return from retirement to face rising prospect Rory MacDonald in a welterweight showdown, with MMA pundits unsure which fighter has the upper hand.

When they meet at UFC 152 in September, Penn already has a fight plan he hopes to utilize when he faces the TriStar product.

“He’s still untested,” Penn recently said on his own website. “I think everything they are saying is true. He’s very good. I think he comes from a very good team. He’s got a lot of very good people. They are going to have him ready. They are going to have him prepared but yes – like you said this is going to be a big fight this isn’t a small fight so there is going to be a lot on the line. All those different stressors and all those different things is definitely going to play into the cardiovascular system.”

Penn also said he has other ideas in mind how to tame MacDonald, as the young Canadian has been on a tear since losing to Carlos Condit at UFC 115 in 2010. Since then, MacDonald has looked impressive in wins against Nate Diaz, Mike Pyle, and Che Mills.

It’s ironic that Penn, a fighter that rarely seemed to live up to his full potential, is discussing trying to test the cardio of such a young guy. MacDonald will need to look out for Penn’s standup skills, and if he drags the fight down to the mat, be aware of submission attempts.
