Rafael Carvalho’s first defense of Bellator’s middleweight title is going down this Friday night in Boise, Idaho, and clearly the Brazilian isn’t expecting to spend much time on the mat.

The middleweight champ is booked to fight Melvin Manhoef at Bellator 155, who has largely made his name in MMA on account of his feared striking skills. Recently, Bellator held a media call in advance of Friday’s event, and Carvalho had this to say about his bout with Manhoef (quote via press release):

“I am excited and really think this could be historical. It’s going to be a lot of strikes and it’s going to be a kickboxing fight with MMA gloves.”

The fight will mark the first time Carvalho has fought since he put away former champ Brandon Halsey with a thumping kick to the body in October. The vaunted striker, who has won 12 straight fights, also had this to say about the importance of his next bout:

“People recognize me more now and I have gained more respect now as the champion…Winning the belt for the first time is one thing, but the real deal is when you defend the belt and keep the belt. That’s when you become the real champion.”

Bellator 155 will be hosted by the CenturyLink Arena and the main card will be broadcast on Spike.
