Bellator 161: Cheick Kongo’s in Favor of Promotion Introducing 5 Round, Non-Title Headliners
By FCF Staff
Cheick Kongo will face Tony Johnson in the headliner for Bellator 161 this Friday night, and the UFC vet would be in favor of a five round fight, instead of three.
While Bellator’s title fights can go as long as 25 minutes, unlike the UFC, non-title main events are just three rounds. Recently Kongo had this to say about subject, while talking to MMA Junkie.com:
“It would be good (to move to five rounds) but I have no problem with three,” Kongo said. “Three, five-minute rounds, we have to figure out how it goes for the best plan. More time would be better. But for me, it’s just a fight no matter how long. It’s still a fight.”
Kongo (24-10-2) is 4-1 in his last 5 bouts with his only loss during that stretch coming via split decision to “King Mo” Lawal. Johnson (10-2), meanwhile, has won three in a row and is also 4-1 in his last 5 contests.
Bellator 161 will take place in Cedar Park, Texas. The main card will be broadcast on Spike.
