Bellator 221: Michael Chandler on Why Rematch With Benson Henderson Doesn’t “Excite Me”

Benson Henderson is hoping to lock-up a fight with the winner of the upcoming bout between Patricio Freire and Michael Chandler. But, it seems pretty clear that the latter isn’t interested in facing Henderson again.

Since Henderson defeated Adam Piccolotti at Bellator 220 last weekend, the former UFC champ has relayed he’s hoping to face the winner of the May 11th, Chandler – Freire fight. But, during a recent media call to promote Bellator 221, Chandler had this to say in response (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“When I win this fight, we’ll see what’s next. Benson Henderson doesn’t really excite me. He’s a guy that can fight until he’s 50 years old and do exactly what he’s doing right now and always have decently close fights.”

“Just because Benson has won a couple of fights against sub-par opponents doesn’t mean he’s back, or he’s a top contender,” Chandler said. “A fight against him doesn’t really excite me. He’s a guy you don’t really want to fight because he doesn’t do anything for you. I’ve already dismantled him once, and I think after this fight we’re going to look to see what’s next.”

The lightweight champ faced Henderson back in 2016 and won the fight via split decision. Most recently, Chandler earned a UD win over Brent Primus in December.

Bellator 221 will be hosted by the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.
