Although “Big” John McCarthy will be focusing on his new job as a commentator for Bellator in the coming months, the legendary referee says his time officiating, isn’t done.

Yesterday Bellator announced that it has added McCarthy to its broadcast team, and that the experienced martial artists will also work with the promotion’s digital content department. When asked by MMA Fighting what this mean for McCarthy, in terms of his future as a referee, he stated:

“Can I go and referee? Yes, I can go and referee,” McCarthy said. “If I want to go and referee something internationally, I can do it. I can do small shows here if I want. I’ll do charity events and things like that. I’m not gonna say, ‘Oh, I’m retired.’ I’m not retired. At this moment, I’m just taking on something else, so that’s gonna go on the back burner. All of my attention is gonna go toward being the best color commentator I can be for Bellator.”

McCarthy also added that he will not be officiating UFC bouts any longer, due to his responsibilities with Bellator. McCarthy will make his broadcasting debut with the promotion for Bellator 192, January 20th.
