BJ Penn Agrees to Fight Rory MacDonald

Penn

By FCF Staff

After much speculation as to whether decorated veteran BJ Penn would ever fight again, the former UFC lightweight and welterweight champ has reportedly agreed to fight rising star Rory MacDonald.

Earlier in the week, while being interviewed on The MMA Hour, MacDonald relayed that he wanted to fight Penn before the renowned fighter’s career comes to a close. Speaking via his wesbite, BJPenn.com, the 33 year-old fighter responded by saying “Rory, I accept your challenge.”

MacDonald had cited the upcoming September 22nd, UFC 152 card in Toronto as a possible venue for the fight, and Penn’s camp has apparently agreed to that date.

The UFC has not made any official announcement regarding the proposed fight.

Following his unanimous decision loss to Nick Diaz in October, Penn (16-8) announced that he was retiring, but since then the Hawaii fighter has hinted that a return could be possible.

The loss to Diaz came in Penn’s third bout, after returning to the welterweight division, and followed a knockout win over Matt Hughes and a draw with Jon Fitch.

MacDonald (13-1) competed last in April and stopped Che Mills in the second round to record his third straight win.

The only man to defeat the 22 year-old prospect is current interim champion Carlos Condit.
