Brendan Schaub Expects to Get Hit Hard By Lavar Johnson

Brendan Schaub

By Michael Hatamoto

Brendan Schaub will have his hands full when he steps into the cage against heavy-handed slugger Lavar Johnson at UFC on FOX 5 in December.

“I think it’s good to control your own destiny.  I just throw a name out there.  He’s had three fights in the UFC and two Knockouts of the Nights.  His sole loss is to Struve.  I think people are scared of him.  I think it’d be a good fight.  Lavar hits hard.  For me, yeah people say I have a weak chin, so this would solidify my place.  But I fight at heavyweight.  Everyone hits hard.”

It should be obvious Schaub doesn’t intend to try and stand in front of Johnson and invite the heavy-handed fighter to punch him in the chin.  Rather, it’s time for Schaub to see what type of punishment he can withstand, as he’ll likely eat some shots while trying to take the fight down to the ground.

Johnson is 2-3 in his last five fights, suffering three submission losses while picking up two KO/TKO finishes since 2011.  Considering Johnson has never gone to decision – and has been to the third round just once through 23 pro MMA fights – Schaub will need to pounce if he has an opportunity to finish Johnson.

Since knocking out PRIDE legend Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 128 in March 2011, Schaub has suffered losses to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Ben Rothwell.  The UFC on FOX 5 heavyweight matchup could be his last if he cannot pick up a win against Schaub – it’s incredible to realize Schaub was so close to a title shot when he met Big Nog one year ago.
