Chad Mendes Says He’s a “Completely Different” Fighter Heading Into Rematch With Jose Aldo

Chad Mendes may have been knocked out by Jose Aldo in their first meeting, but the featherweight says a “completely different” fighter will face the champ in their August 2nd rematch.

Mendes earned a title shot in January, 2012, after winning six straights fights under the WEC and UFC banner. In five of the six bouts, the decorated wrestler scored a unanimous decision win.

Since his loss to Aldo, however, Mendes has turned to his evolving striking skills to record four stoppage wins. The 29 year-old fighter has won five straight.

Well, in the latest edition of “UFC Tonight” on FOX Sports 1, here is some of what Mendes had to say about the man who will face Aldo.

“This is a huge fight for me. This is it. This is the top of the top. I fought him once before and it’s my only loss,” the Team Alpha Male member noted. “That Chad Mendes is a completely different Chad Mendes than the one who’s here now. My mixed martial arts game has gotten so much better. My power, accuracy, everything is there as far as my standup and he has to worry about my wrestling also. This is my chance to bring that belt back to the United States where it belongs and I’m excited to do it.”

Mendes and Aldo will square off at UFC 176, which will be hosted by the Staples Center in Los Angeles, August 2nd.
