Chael Sonnen Moving to Light-Heavyweight, Says Bout With Forrest Griffin Next

By FCF Staff

After failing to defeat UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva for a second time this summer, Chael Sonnen has announced that he’s moving to light-heavyweight and that he’ll fight former champ Forrest Griffin on December 29th.

The outspoken, 35 year-old-fighter made the announcement while appearing on the most recent UFC Tonight program.

The December 29th card has not been officially announced yet by the UFC, however, it’s expected to take place in Las Vegas and to feature a rematch between heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez.

Prior to his TKO loss to Silva in July, Sonnen (27-12) had scored back-to-back wins over Brian Stann and Michael Bisping.

The only men to defeat Sonnen in his last ten bouts are Silva and Demian Maia.

Griffin (19-7) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Tito Ortiz in July to win their rubber match series.

The former champion is 3-2 in his last five bouts with losses coming to Silva and Mauricio Rua, and an additional win occurring versus Rich Franklin.

After his win over Ortiz, UFC President Dana White reportedly relayed that he felt the time had come for the 33 year-old-fighter to retire. Instead, Griffin will now face one of the promotion’s biggest names.
