Following his loss to Leon Edwards at UFC 296, Colby Covington gave no indication that he’s thinking of retiring and even called for a fight with Stephen Thompson. But, Chael Sonnen is questioning whether “Chaos” will return to the cage.

Covington failed again to secure the UFC’s undisputed welterweight crown on Saturday night, as the champion Edwards won the fight via unanimous decision. Covington’s performance has since been widely scrutinized and criticized, and there’s been extensive speculation about what’s next for the soon-to-be 36-year-old.

While talking about that topic immediately after UFC 296, Sonnen relayed that he’s not sure Covington will fight again (quotes via MMA Junkie.com).

“I love your suggestion of Rakhmonov. I’m just not sure Dana will even make that suggestion to Colby,” Sonnen said during the card’s post-fight show. “What I worry about is will he take it? I don’t know where his heart is at. To go up that mountain as many times as he did. Colby’s career is a riddle.

“He’s had three world title fights, he was an interim champion, he never lost, he woke up one day, he wasn’t the interim champion. He fought the reigning ‘BMF’ champion, dominated him, and never became ‘BMF’ champion. I think that there’s some real frustrations. I just don’t know if he wants to start over. That’s the hard truth. I don’t know that we see Colby Covington again.”

With the defeat, Covington’s record dropped to 17-4. The controversial fighter has gone 2-3 in his last five contests.
