Charles Oliveira Tells Lightweights Not to “Lie” About Willingness to Step up at UFC Rio
By FCF Staff
Following Rafael Fiziev’s withdrawal from UFC Rio, Charles Oliveira is accusing lightweight contenders of lying about their willingness to take the fight.
Fiziev was booked to fight the former champ in the headliner of the October 11th event. But, recently, it was reported thec content has withdrawn due to injury.
Since then, a fired-up Oliveira fired verbal jabs at other lightweights, while discussing his desire to fight at the event (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).
“Everybody knows my UFC Rio fight is off. But don’t fall for the talk of these guys out there [saying] ‘I’m here, I’ll go,’ because the UFC is calling and they’re all saying, ‘Oh, there’s not enough time to make weight. Oh, I can’t.’ They’re posting this on the internet to get hype…”
“I want to fight at UFC Rio, I asked for this fight. My opponent got hurt, then 10 guys show up saying they would fight. So far, every time the UFC calls [asking] ‘Let’s fight?’ [they say] ‘I can’t.’ So stop with that because it’s not a good look. Do you want fame? Do something else. Don’t come saying you’ll fight when it’s a lie, OK?”
The 35-year-old Oliveira (35-11) is coming off a knockout loss to Ilia Topuria in June, which followed his decision win over Michael Chandler last November. The Brazilian star has gone 2 and 3 in his last 5 fights.
