Cheick Kongo vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Added to UFC 149
By FCF Staff
Shortly removed from the news that UFC featherwieght champ Jose Aldo will not compete at the upcoming July 21st, UFC 149, it’s been announced today that the Calgary bound card will see Cheick Kongo fight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
The Calgary Sun was the first to report that Kongo will face the former UFC interim champion at the event, and since then, both the UFC Canada and UFC Twitter accounts have retweeted the story.
Nogueira (33-7) will be returning to action for the first time since he had his arm snapped by Frank Mir at UFC 140 in December.
Prior to the defeat, Nogueira knocked out Brendan Schaub at UFC 134 last August. Nogueira is 2-3 in his last five fights.
Kongo (17-7) is also coming off a loss; in February the powerful heavyweight was stopped by K-1 vet Mark Hunt at UFC 144.
The defeat ended Kongo’s four fight undefeated streak, which included wins over Matt Mitrione, Pat Barry and Paul Buentello.
The main event for UFC 149 has not been announced yet, however, Dana White has stated that if Jon Jones is able to, the light-heavyweight champion’s expected bout with Dan Henderson could take place on the card.
The July 21st event will be hosted by Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome.
