Coach Campaigns For GSP – Conor McGregor Bout

Georges St-Pierre

By FCF Staff

It remains to be seen who Georges St-Pierre will face in his comeback bout, but the former champ’s coach has proposed a bout with lightweight champ, Conor McGregor.

Recently it was announced that St-Pierre has come to terms with the UFC on a new deal, after weeks of negotiations. GSP announced last year that he intended to fight again, after announcing he was taking a hiatus in 2013, following his decision win over Johny Hendricks.

Since St-Pierre’s deal was announced, his head coach Firas Zahabi appeared on “The MMA Hour”. While discussing St-Pierre’s comeback bout, and who he might face, Zahabi named Michael Bisping, Conor McGregor and Tyron Woodley as possibilities. But, since the latter is about to face Stephen Thompson, who has trained with GSP in the past, Zahabi added the following (quote via MMA Fighting):

“So I think the welterweight title is not really something he (St-Pierre) is thinking about right now because of the current landscape, but there is always the 185-pound belt. And of course, McGregor is such a mega-star that if you put those two on a main event, I don’t think that anybody in the world wouldn’t watch that. I think that even non-MMA fans would watch that. But again, I don’t do the match-ups, I don’t do the managing, I’m just talking as a trainer.”

McGregor is currently taking a break from fighting, in advance of the birth of his first child. The outspoken fighter has said he hopes to box Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his next bout.
