Conor McGregor Believes Next Fight Will be Bout With Floyd Mayweather

Conor McGregor

For months,  fans and media members have dismissed the idea that Floyd Mayweather will box Conor McGregor, but the latter believes his next bout will indeed be that one.

Last summer, there was widespread talk about a Mayweather – McGregor fight, and both men expressed an interest in making it happen. McGregor returned to the UFC, and as a result, discussion about the rumored match died down. But more recently talk about the fight has reached new heights, due to McGregor receiving a boxing license in California, and Dana White tabling an offer for the boxing bout to happen.

McGregor held a media event in Manchester recently, and during it, the UFC’s lightweight champ was asked if he thinks he’ll fight Mayweather next. The Irish star stated (quote via MMA Fighting):

“One-hundred percent,” McGregor said. “I believe the next time I step into a combat arena will be through the ropes wearing 10-ounce or eight-ounce gloves. I believe so.”

One of the key reasons the bout has been met with skepticism, is because McGregor is under contract to the UFC. So, the consensus has been that the UFC would need to sign off on the match-up, in order for it to happen. McGregor, however, doesn’t think that’s necessarily the case:

“With the Ali Act, I believe I can,” McGregor argued. “Especially now that there’s offers on the table. But I think it’s smoother if we’re all involved. I think we’re all about good business. I’ve done great business with the UFC, with Dana (White), with everyone. I think it’s smoother if everyone just gets together and we get it involved. But again, everyone’s got to know their place.”

The brash champion also said that the Mayweather bout interests him over facing Tony Ferguson, Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tyron Woodley in the Octagon. He also said he’d be willing to wait out a year for “$100 million”.

McGregor is coming off a stoppage win over Eddie Alvarez in November to secure the UFC’s 155 title.
