Conor McGregor’s Coach Still Believes Bout Between UFC Champ And Floyd Mayweather Will Happen

Although Conor McGregor is booked to fight Nate Diaz at UFC 202, and is not contractually permitted to box, the star’s coach would be “surprised” if a bout with Floyd Mayweather didn’t happen.

During McGregor’s well documented rift with the UFC in recent weeks, headlines were dominated by talk about him boxing Mayweather. The latter fuelled the rumor by repeatedly expressing an interest in the fight, although Mayweather said he never reached out to the UFC to initiate talks. Eventually the promotion reached a deal with McGregor and Diaz for their August 20th rematch.

Recently McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, spoke with the Underground. The Straight Blast Gym leader had this to say about his fighter facing Mayweather (quote via MMA Fighting.com):

“It puts it on hold. I think that contest will happen eventually but it’s on hold for now. I’d be very surprised if it doesn’t at some stage. I think it’s a bigger fight; I think there’s a lot of intrigue about it. I could be 100% wrong. Right now we’re focusing on August 20th. We have an important rematch – a mixed martial arts fight – but if in time that fight was to be announced it would not surprise me and I think it would be an interesting one.”

Mayweather retired from boxing last year having gone 49-0 in his career. The former champ has even stated that only a fight with McGregor interests him at this point.
