Cris Cyborg Tests Positive For Banned Substance; UFC Prez Says She’ll Be Stripped Of Strikeforce Title

By FCF Staff

The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) announced that Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos tested positive for a banned substance – stanozolol metabolites – following her victory over Hiroko Yamanaka in San Diego, Calif. on Dec. 17.  Santos’ win has been overturned to a no-contest, she was fined $2500, suspended for one year by the commission and, according to UFC President Dana White, Santos will be stripped of her title.

In a statement posted on Strikeforce.com, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker was far less decisive than White was during an interview on ESPN radio out of Las Vegas, as far as how Santos will be dealt with.

“Strikeforce has not seen the test results regarding Ms. Santos,” stated Coker in today’s announcement. “However, we have a consistent and strong stance against any use of performance-enhancing drugs. We also have a long history of supporting effective drug testing of athletes by authorized regulatory bodies.

“Therefore, we will closely monitor the matter and will work with the California State Athletic Commission regarding any information we may be asked to provide. We also recognize that Ms. Santos has administrative process rights under California law, and we hope that she is not prejudged before she has the opportunity to exercise such rights.”

Santos earned a purse of $66,000 for her 16 second KO of Yamanaka at San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center.  The win was Santos’ 11th straight.

Santos was required to provide the CSAC with a urine sample the night of the fight with Yamanaka.  She has the right to appeal her suspension.
