After dropping down to bantamweight for his only appearance of 2022, it looks like Cub Swanson will be returning to the featherweight division.

The longtime, featherweight contender made the cut to bantamweight last October for a fight with Jonathan Martinez, and lost the contest via TKO (due to a leg kicks). Recently, the 39-year-old fighter spoke with MMA Junkie Radio, and Swanson reported a return to 145 is likely.

“I’ve been back in the lab right here at UFC Gym in Costa Mesa,” Swanson said. “I’m just trying to get back in shape and have fun with it. But I’m looking to fight in probably August. I’m hoping to fight before my kids’ birthdays. That’s important to me. But you don’t always get what you want, but that’s what I’m trying to do. I’ll probably end up doing featherweight, doing 145.

“I was really annoyed that people were like, ‘You should’ve never dropped.’ It made me want to stay at bantamweight and do it better, which I know I could have. I know I could have made some adjustments. I think I’m not going to be doing this forever, so 145, I know the weight class. I think it will be easier for me and my family to do that weight class.”

Prior to facing Martinez, Swanson (28-13) stopped Darren Elkins in the opening round of their 2021 bout. The California fighter, who has only competed four times since 2019, has gone 3-2 in his last 5 bouts.
