Dana White Discusses Tony Ferguson’s Future, Believes ‘El Cucuy’ Remains Elite Fighter

Although Tony Ferguson has lost three straight bouts, and will 38 next in February, Dana White believes ‘El Cucuy’ remains a top lightweight.

Ferguson (25-6) put together a 12-fight winning streak from 2013 through 2019, and established himself as one of the sport’s top fighters. But, since 2019, Ferguson has dropped consecutive bouts to Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira and most recently, Beneil Dariush.

Due to Ferguson’s recent setbacks, and his age, there’s been widespread discussion about his contender status. But, while talking about Ferguson’s future recently with UFC Arabia, White said the following (quote via MMA Junkie).

“He’s still one of the most talented guys out there,” White said. “When he’s ready to come back, we’ll match him up and we’ll see how does.”

Islam Makhachev recently claimed that Ferguson turned down a short-notice opportunity to fight him today, at UFC 267. White believes, however, that the longtime contender is taking time off.

“I don’t think so, I don’t think he’s eager to fight right now. I think he’s taking some time off.”

Makhachev, meanwhile, is booked to fight Dan Hooker today at UFC 267.
