Dana White Says Only an “Idiot” Would Have Booked Nick Diaz to Fight Kamaru Usman Next

Recently Nick Diaz made it clear he’s not happy about the UFC’s decision to have him fight Robbie Lawler, and argued he should be fighting Kamaru Usman next. Since then, Dana White hasn’t held back, in blasting that idea.

Ahead of his rematch with Lawler tomorrow at UFC 266, Diaz said whoever decided to book Diaz – Lawler II was an “idiot”. The polarizing star also argued he should be fighting Usman, and claimed he’d defeat the welterweight champ.

While talking to Yahoo Sports since Diaz made those comments, White said this (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“You think he should be fighting Kamaru Usman?” White said. “You know what I’ve been saying lately: Kamaru Usman is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, OK? (He beat Jorge) Masvidal twice, Gilbert Burns, Tyron Woodley, (Rafael dos Anjos), Demian Maia, Leon Edwards. I mean, the list of guys that this guy has beaten is unbelievable, and the way that he beat them.

“He’s the world champion in that division and he’s the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. Does anybody out there think that that’s who Nick Diaz should come back and fight after not fighting for seven years? That would be an idiot that would make that fight.”

Diaz hasn’t fought since January, 2015, when he lost via decision to Anderson Silva. The bout was eventually overturned to a no-contest after Silva tested positive for banned substances.

Lawler and Diaz fought for the first time in 2004, and the latter won the bout via second-round knockout.
