Although Conor McGregor has made it clear he wants to fight before this fall, Dana White believes the star should wait for another shot at the UFC’s lightweight belt.

After McGregor stopped Donald Cerrone in January, White said the former champ had earned another shot at the lightweight title. But, McGregor said he wants to stay active, and more recently he’s been referencing summer for his next bout.

Since Justin Gaethje isn’t expected to face champion Khabib Nurmagomedov until September, this has prompted talk about McGregor possibly fighting Nate Diaz or Jorge Masvidal next.

During a recent episode of the  “Talk the Talk” podcast, White was asked about McGregor’s next bout, and he had this to say (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“I think that the best thing for him – I’m not saying this is what’s going to happen – but in my opinion he lets this Gaethje-Khabib fight play out, then he fights the winner. I think that’s the smartest move for him.”

“You know him. Maybe he wants to fight before that and if he does, we can figure something out. But I think that’s the move for him right now.”

Prior to defeating Cerrone, McGregor was submitted by Nurmagomedov in October, 2018.
