Dana White Will be “Shocked” if Jon Jones Doesn’t Want to Fight Tom Aspinall in Unification Fight
By FCF Staff
In recent months, there’s been plenty of talk about whether Jon Jones could hang up the gloves after he fights Stipe Miocic. But, UFC President Dana White is very confident the renowned fighter will want to test himself against Tom Aspinall, if he’s victorious in November.
Jones is expected to finally battle Miocic at the UFC’s upcoming, November card in New York City. The two were supposed to fight last November, but a pectoral injury that required surgery sidelined Jones.
Since then, Aspinall has gone on to secure the interim heavyweight title, and he will face the winner of Jones – Miocic. But, due to the fact Jones is 37, and because he continued to push for a battle with Miocic, some have wondered if the bout could be his last, win or lose.
More recently, White spoke with Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole. While discussing a Jones – Aspinall unification fight, White said he believes “Bones” will pursue that fight if he wins in November (quotes via MMA Fighting.com).
“Stipe 100 percent is going to retire after this fight. Listen, Jon Jones, you know how I talk about Jon Jones and what I think of Jon Jones as a fighter — Jon Jones always loves to challenge himself, moved up to heavyweight.
“I don’t know what Jon Jones will do after this fight, but I would be shocked if he didn’t want to test himself against [Tom] Aspinall.”
Jones (27-1) won the vacated heavyweight title in March, 2023, by quickly submitting Ciryl Gane. The former light-heavyweight champ has fought just twice since 2019.
The 41-year-old Miocic (20-4) hasn’t competed since March, 2021, when he was knocked out by Francis Ngannou.
