Tony Ferguson further strengthened his case for a title shot at UFC 238, by defeating Donald Cerrone, and it looks like “El Cucuy” could indeed, face the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov – Dustin Poirier.

Ferguson recorded his 12th straight victory at the recent event, after Cerrone was not allowed to continue into round three, due to a completely, swollen shut eye. After the win, there was some talk about the possibility of a rematch between Cerrone and Ferguson, however, the latter also campaigned for a title shot.

More recently Dana White was a guest on LV Sports Biz, and the UFC President said this about Ferguson (quote via MMA Junkie):

“Khabib is fighting Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi in September,” White informed the show. “Then I don’t know, we’ll see. Tony Ferguson just came off a great win this weekend over ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, and I’m assuming he’s next.”

And while talking about Conor McGregor, who has been driving for a rematch with Nurmagomedov, White said:

“We’ll see what happens with Conor— what Conor wants to do Conor is super rich,” White said. “It’s hard to get guys to fight when they’re super rich.”

Ferguson (25-3) won the interim lightweight title in 2017 by submitting Kevin Lee. The well-rounded fighter was supposed to face Nurmagomedov last April, but a freak kee injury for Ferguson to withdraw.
