Danny Downes Confirms UFC Release

By FCF Staff

Following a unanimous decision loss to Ramsey Nijem at UFC 137 in October, lightweight Danny Downes has announced that he’s been released from the UFC. The defeat was Downes’ second in a row, as in June, the Roufusport fighter lost by UD to Jeremy Stephens at the TUF 13 Finale.

The resilient and former WEC competitor announced the news via his official Twitter account.

To those asking, Zuffa has “exercised its right in to accelerate the term of its promotional and other obligations.” In other words I’m cut

The 25 year-old Downes made his way to the UFC earlier this year, after going 1-1 during a stint with the now defunct WEC. During his time with the promotion, Downes lost by submission to Chris Horodecki, before scoring a unanimous decision win over Tiequan Zhang last December.

Downes’ only other bout in 2011 took place in May, when he tapped out Taurean Bogguess with a first round triangle-choke, while competing for the North American Fighting Championship.

After announcing his release, a follow up ‘tweet’ from Downes added:

Thanks to everyone for their support. I honestly appreciate it. This nerd from the south side of Chicago has come a long way.

Earlier in the week, light-heavyweight Eliot Marshall announced that he also has been cut by the UFC, following his unanimous decision loss to Brandon Vera in October.
