IFC FIGHTING HITS THE TROPICANA
THE INTERNATIONAL FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO ATLANTIC CITY WITH IFC BATTLEGROUND 2001
The explosive excitement of IFC fighting returns to Atlantic City on Friday, January 19 with 11 great extreme fights inside the metal cage. This ultimate crossover fighting sport features the best fighters of the combat sports – boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, karate, kickboxing, jeet kune do, judo, tae kwon do, sambo, ninja and others – utilizing the best techniques from all of those sports while fighting in a caged ring.
The IFC Battleground 2001 fighters come from around the globe. They include a former member of the Iranian Olympic Wrestling Team, a World Kickboxing Champion from Montenegro, a master of Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee’s style of Martial Arts) from Ecuador, a Budokan specialist from Japan and some of the toughest martial artists in the US. Local favorites include Joe Priole, a Brazilian JuJitsu practioner from Philadelphia and Vineland’s Al DeRosa, who calls his street effective style – freefighting. On Friday, January 19 at the Tropicana they all get to find what works the best as they meet head on in the fighting cage in IFC Battleground 2001.
Among the many highlights of the event is the IFC Battleground Heavyweight Championship between New York’s Kareem Ellington and Rutherford, New Jersey’s Eddy Rolon. Both were victorious in their tournaments in the last IFC event at the Trop on September 30th. Ellington is a young up and comer who does nothing else but fight while Rolon is a cable technician who had several national amateur fighting titles under his belt before launching his pro career with the IFC. Both fighters are undefeated as professionals. Only one will exit the cage undefeated on January 19.
In an exciting matchup with an international flavor, Japan’s Motoi "Jimmy" Hattori will meet Montenegro’s Peter Kaljedec. These are two truly experienced warriors. Kaljedec is a three-time world kickboxing champion who has fought all around the world including Hattori’s Japan. Hattori is another accomplished fighter who has wealth of experience both in Japan and the United States. Harrori’s training is in both traditional karate and jujitsu.
IFC Battleground 2001 will also feature two four man single elimination tournaments plus a 605 pound Super Heavyweight Superfight featuring Boston’s six foot four inch, two hundred and eighty five pound Joe Campanella against Maine’s six foot eight inch three hundred and twenty pound Tim Silva. Exciting? You bet it is! This is the new fighting sport for the new millennium with kicks, punches, throws and submission holds. The IFC open style fighting events have generated huge interest among fight and martial arts fans and have rekindled interest in the age old question of which fighting discipline is the most effective and which individual is truly the greatest fighter in the world. When the cage door slams shut, there’s nowhere to run and no place to hide!
IFC Battleground 2000 is promoted by D. Benjamin Brown Productions and is sanctioned by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board. The event will be broadcast around the world. Tickets begin at $25 and are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 1-800-736-1420.
It’s the IFC, it’s in Atlantic City and it’s real!

Hawaiian Combat 2: Hawaii vs. Washington
Superstar Gym (Jesus Is Lord Gym)
Campbell Industrial Park, Kapolei, Hawaii
March 3, 2001
By Chris Onzuka – Chris@Onzuka.com
After an incredible inaugural event, Brennan Kamaka and company are already deeply engulfed in preparation for an even better event. Hawaii has produced some incredible fighters like John Lewis, Kimo, Ray "Bradda" Cooper, Ron Jhun, and Baret Yoshida, especially for being such a small place and having a small population. And this was accomplished with absolutely no amateur division at all. Well, that is changing. Egan Inoue was the first to put on an amateur shootfighting event in Hawaii and held it at his gym. Other than that, amateur events have been nonexistent. Kamaka is trying to change that and he will accept nothing but a safe and fair environment to do it in. The first event was made up of local Hawaii fighters from different schools. This time, Kamaka is going to reach out across the "pond" for some talent from the west coast. Team Washington is made up of Carlson Gracie team member, Marcelo Alonso’s students. Team Hawaii consists of the SWAT Fighting Team, Team Tiger, Jesus Is Lord and some freelance local fighters. Bringing in fighters from out of state allow Hawaii’s up and coming fighters to gain experience and treat local fight fans at the same time. The final card will be released some time in February. If you have any questions call Brennan Kamaka @ (808) 864-5511 or email him at kamakae001@hawaii.rr.com.
