Derrick Lewis could be just a win or two away from fighting for the UFC’s heavyweight title again. But, recently the feared slugger outlined why winning the prestigious belt would be “crazy”.

Lewis is booked to fight fellow top-contender Curtis Blaydes this Saturday in the headliner of UFC Vegas 19. As the fight approaches, Lewis is ranked #4 in the UFC’s heavyweight division and Blaydes is #2.

So, if Lewis can defeat the powerful wrestler, the heavyweight won’t be far out from securing another title shot. While talking about his title prospects recently with the media, the 36-year-old said this (quotes via MMA Junkie).

“That would be crazy,” Lewis said at a pre-fight news conference held Thursday. “That would be really crazy for a guy like me, going through all the stuff that I went through, and becoming UFC champion, heavyweight champion of the world. That’s just crazy to even put in the same sentence as my name: ‘Derrick Lewis, heavyweight champion of the world.’

“It just felt even crazy when they announced I have the all-time knockouts in the UFC compared to all the thousands of other guys who fought before me and all the big knockout artists that they had. It’s crazy that I’m the No. 1 guy now. It’s like crazy, especially how I used to approach the sport, not even really taking it seriously. To even be this far in my career is just so crazy.”

Lewis (24-7), who was submitted by now-former champion Daniel Cormier in their 2018 title fight, has won three straight.

Blaydes (14-2) is riding a four-fight winning streak.
