Dustin Poirier Says Nate Diaz Fight’s Not Next on “Things-to-do-list”

Although Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier have traded tweets recently about fighting, the latter says a fight with the Stockton star isn’t his first priority.

Ever since a planned bout between the two fell through in 2018, there’s been talk about a Poirier – Diaz fight materializing. Speculation about the fight has spiked again, after Diaz recently called for the match-up once more.

But, while talking to Ariel Helwani for MMA Fighting since then, Poirier reported he hasn’t been contacted about fighting Diaz.

“You know how these negotiations go,” Poirier said on “The MMA Hour.” “Unless they’re talking to him, and they said something. … Nothing’s been offered to me. I haven’t spoken to the UFC. I can’t say the same for Nate, for Nathaniel. But like I said, I think they will call me soon.”

Following Poirier’s TKO win over Conor McGregor in July, the expectation has been that the former interim champ will challenge current champ, Charles Oliveira next. McGregor isn’t expected to fight again until next year, on account of the broken leg he sustained in his rubber match with Poirier.

The latter, meanwhile, seems to be on board with fighting for the belt next.

“I think I’m the clear-cut No. 1 guy who should be fighting for the belt,” he said. “I think after the fight, they even said that was the next thing that was going to happen. But we’ll see. I’ve heard people say they think it’s going to happen in December, but that’s just me looking at MMA headlines, so I don’t know what’s going to happen. I have a feeling we’re going to find out soon.”

And while talking about facing Diaz, Poirier (28-6) also said this.

“I think it would be a great fight. But I’m not chasing it. There’s a possibility that it could happen, but on my things-to-do list, that’s not the next thing to do.”

Diaz (20-13), meanwhile, is coming off a decision loss to Leon Edwards in June.
