Eastman Back in UFC 50 By Joe Hall Preliminary lineups for UFC 50 that floated through the MMA community had Marvin Eastman on the card against Canadian Patrick Cote. Then, suddenly, Eastman’s name was replaced by Ivan Salaverry.
Eastman was stopped that night in the first round by Ray Sefo, but he felt his opponent had fought dirty by hitting him while he tried to touch gloves. Shortly after the match was stopped, a melee ensued in the ring, much to the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s disapproval. Unsure of whether Eastman would be suspended and unable to fight at 50, the UFC pulled him from the card. It was then Eastman realized the seriousness of his offense and the breadth of the Nevada Commission’s jurisdiction. One post-fight altercation after a kickboxing match in Vegas and you can’t kickbox, box or fight MMA anywhere in the country (or beyond) that’s regulated. If you’re suspended, that is. Eastman wasn’t. He went before the Commission and assured them he’d walk away if he found himself in a similar situation after a fight. They fined him $500 and gave him the rest of his purse, which they had been holding. "The Commission don’t play around," says Eastman. "I accepted the fine, thanked them and told them have a nice day. I don’t want to see them no more because it could have been 20-30% of my purse." Ivan Salaverry had filled Eastman’s vacancy to take on Cote in the light heavyweight bout. Earlier this week, however, Phil Baroni blew out the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his knee, leaving middleweight Trevor Prangley without an opponent. Immediately after the UFC heard that Eastman wasn’t suspended, he says, they called his manager to see if he wanted back in. "I was like hell yeah," says Eastman. "I told you I wasn’t going to get suspended." Salaverry then moved into Baroni’s spot and will face Trevor Prangley in a middleweight bout, and Eastman is now back on the card against his original opponent, Patrick Cote. Eastman denies reports that he had been taken off the card due to a hand injury. "It was simply because they didn’t know if I was going to get suspended," he says. "My mind is 100% clear. I’ll be able to fight like a monster, like I normally fight." |

From Dream Stage Entertainment:  Randleman Inducted into Ohio State Hall of Fame  LOS ANGELES, California – PRIDE FIGHTING super star Kevin "The Monster" Randleman has been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of his alma mater, Ohio State University. Based on his impressive accomplishments as an amateur wrestler for OSU, Randleman was voted in by the Ohio State Varsity "O" Association. The class of 2004 will be officially inducted on Friday, September 10th and then introduced to the public during halftime of the Marshall-Ohio State football game in Ohio Stadium on Saturday, September 11th. Since 1993 a total of 59 women have been inducted; 210 men have been honored since 1977. The 2004 class includes 12 new members (eight men and four women) ranging in sports from swimming to football. Randleman’s OSU career spanned from 1991 to 1993 and he enters the hall of fame as one of the finest amateur wrestlers in the history of the university. His accomplishments include: being a two-time national champion in the 177-pound weight class in 1992 and 1993 … finishing second in the nation in 1991 … first two-time national champion in the history of Ohio State wrestling … three-time All-American (1991, 1992, 1993) … Ohio State’s first three-time Big Ten champion … three-time All-Big Ten selection … finished the 1992 season with a record of 42-0-3, becoming the second Buckeye to record an undefeated season. As a member of Mark Coleman’s "Hammer House" team, Randleman translated this success as a wrestler into a career in mixed martial arts. His first MMA match was in 1996 and he later joined PRIDE FC in 2002. In 2004 he was invited to compete in PRIDE FC’s prestigious heavyweight Grand Prix. Though he did not win the tournament, his knockout of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic during the first round remains as one of the lasting images of the competition as well as one of the greatest MMA highlights in recent years. From the event’s promoter: Cagewarriors 8: Brutal Force Saturday 18th September The Octagon Centre Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TQ, UK Doors Open 6pm – Event Starts 7pm The 8th edition of the Cagewarriors Fighting Championships is a nearly a week away and is headlined by an explosive main event as Gerald "The Finishing Machine" Strebendt and Paul "Semtex" Daley collide in the welterweight division in a classic striker vs. grappler clash. This 8 bout card also includes 2 title fights as Tengiz Tedoradze the CWFC Heavyweight Champion aims to extend his unbeaten streak to 10 straight wins, against the stocky but powerful Craig Amer. Tengiz is a former Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion, who was originally from the ex-Soviet State of Georgia. However Tengiz now resides in Yorkshire, England and will have a lot of home support in this titanic title match. Tengiz recently crushed the undefeated British prospect James Thompson with an awesome display of Ground and Pound which shocked many observers. But can he do it again against Craig Amer who is a 1 punch knockout specialist whose victories have all come in the very first round by KO. The other title fight on the card is a rematch between Paul McVeigh and Chin Weerasinghe for the CWFC Bantamweight Title. Once again the CWFC breaks the mould by being the first UK MMA promotion to have a legitimate and professional under 61.2 Kilo/135lbs Bantamweight division. In their previous encounter for the CWFC Featherweight Title at Cagewarriors 3 in March 2003, McVeigh got a close decision win over Weerasinghe who knocked McVeigh down within the opening 30 seconds of the bout and showed superior stand-up throughout. However Weerasinghe was slowly outworked by the superior groundwork of the young Irish prodigy who is trained by the Irish BJJ purple belt John Kavanagh. Now 18 months on, Weerasinghe is pumped, ready and has even dropped out of other fights in order to avenge what he saw as a controversial defeat by McVeigh back in March 2003. Also featuring on this card is the active UK veteran Paul Jenkins, who will be fighting in his 6th MMA contest in 2 months, the up and coming Ian Jones, who destroyed tough Paratrooper Sandy Geddas at Cagewarriors 6 with a devastating display of Muay Thai striking. And there will also be a Cage Kickboxing bout featuring Dan Hardy who trains alongside Paul Daley at the Roughhouse Gym in Nottingham, and recently beat Paul Jenkins in the Main Event of FCFN 2.
