Elvis Mutapcic Says Kevin Casey’s BJJ Black Belt is “Way Over Hyped” After UFC 199 Bout

Elvis Mutapcic was forced to battle the top game of Kevin Casey at UFC 199 last weekend, but the middleweight clearly wasn’t impressed with what he encountered.

Casey, who is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Rickson Gracie, took Mutapcic to the floor a couple of times during their bout. Although Casey was able to control the action from their for periods of time, Mutapcic took little punishment and worked his way out.

Recently Mutapcic appeared on Full Contact Fighter Radio, and while discussing the ground skills of Casey, the rugged vet stated:

“I really think his black belt is way over hyped to what it is,” said Mutapcic. “I want to say that for anybody in the future that fights him out there. I fought better blue belts than that. I really think that his, like jiu-jitsu, maybe straight jiu-jitsu, his black belt is something, but in the fight his jiu-jitsu doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have it. He’s scared. I’m going to tell all the future opponents that are going to fight him that he’s scared.”

“If you go out there and push him, I guarantee you’re going to break him. I told him at the end of the second, when he was mounted on me in the second, I said ‘you’re tired aren’t you?’. Like he had nothing left. He will break so easy, so that’s for future guys that want to fight him, he’s so fake. All he wants to do out there, he wants to get a spotlight, he’s not a real fighter.”

When round three began, Mutapcic appeared to be the fresher fighter, and proceeded to dominate the round. The fight, which was declared a split draw, ended with Mutapcic on top and firing away at Casey.

“That’s what pissed me off. He’ll take a beating, he’s tough, but he’s not a real fighter…” added Mutapcic, who revealed in the interview that he injured his knee early in the bout, and has since had surgery to repair damage to his meniscus and ACL. “I’m just, I’m coming off a draw, and it pisses me off even more. I know I could have beat him. I know I beat him. I’ve got very little respect for his ground game in MMA, and very little respect for him as a fighter….I really didn’t feel like he’s a high level black belt.”

With the draw, Mutapcic moved his overall record to 15-4-1. Casey’s, meanwhile, now stands at 9-4-1, with 2 no-contests.
