Extreme Trials returns to Clinton, Iowa


      The Extreme Trials, one of the most popular amateur events in the Midwest, is scheduled for Saturday, July 29, at the Pig Pen in Clinton, Iowa.
      There will be 5 weight divisions (150-under, 170-under, 190-under, 210-under, and heavyweight) with each division winner earning a berth in the 2000 U.S. Mixed Martial Arts National Championships in December. Winners at the nationals receive pro deals to compete in Furute Brawl, Extreme Challenge or USWF events.
      Extreme Trials begin at 2 p.m. and will be held outside at the Pig Pen, a popular local tavern. Cost to compete is $25 in advance and $30 the week of the show.
      In past events, as many as 60 competitors took part in the event.
      The fighter hotel will be the Super 8, which is located next to the Pig Pen on hwy. 30… Mention the Extreme Trials and fighters will get a $48 rate for a double room. Rooms are limited, so make arraangements early by calling 319 242-8870.
      To enter, call 319 650-8585 or 319 332-2075 to get an application. Because this is an open tourney, all fighters will be accepted, as long as they have no more than three professional bouts.

Tuesday, July 11 — Brian Gassaway will be fighting in Pancrase in Japan on July 23, and today we catch up with him. We also talk to IFC (International Fighting Championships) promoter Paul Smith about the July 18 IFC/Warriors Challenge IX show at Table Mountain Casino in Friant, CA, near Fresno.

Wednesday, July 12 — Evan Tanner successfully returned to action this past Saturday in Amarillo, TX, with a thrilling victory, as did the USWF (Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation), after a yearlong hiatus for both. He is both the heavyweight champion and president of the company, and today he discusses all this and tells us how it is to wear both hats. Also, Kevin Jackson, a veteran of UFC and Extreme Fighting, and an Olympic gold medalist wrestler, is now a coach for USA Wrestling and the US Army freestyle team. Today he discusses the US’s chances at the upcoming Olympics, and whether or not he himself will ever return to the fight game.

Thursday, July 13 — Chuck Liddell will be in the main event at the July 18 IFC/Warriors Challenge IX, facing Steve Heath for the IFC World Light Heavyweight Championship. Today we talk with Chuck.

Friday, July 14 — Mikey Burnett of the Lion’s Den won over many fans in his UFC performances. Now he tries to gain some more fans, as he will make his pro boxing debut in Tulsa, OK, on August 4. Today we talk with him all about it.
