Fabricio Werdum Has Controversial Loss to Renan Ferreira Overturned

By FCF Staff

In an instance rarely seen in the sport of MMA, Fabricio Werdum has had his controversial loss to Renan Ferreira last week overturned.

Werdum faced Ferreria at the PFL’s third event of its 2021 campaign, and appeared to tap Ferreira with an opening-round triangle choke. The fight wasn’t stopped, however, and Ferreira went on to score a first round KO.

On Monday, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) confirmed to ESPN that after reviewing footage of the fight’s conclusion, the bout has been overturned to a no contest. As per PFL’s rules, this means both Werdum and Ferreira will be awarded one point in the heavyweight standings.

Werdum’s manager Ali Abdelaziz was quoted saying in the article:

“I want to give credit to Nick Lembo and the New Jersey commission,” Abdelaziz said. “He took the extra step to get it right for the athletes. This is why he’s one of the best commissioners we’ve ever seen.”

The 43-year-old Werdum was making his PFL debut at the recent event. The former UFC heavyweight champ’s record now stands at 24-9-1, 1 NC.

Ferreira, who is 31, now carries a record of 6-2, with 1 no contest.
