Alexander Volkanovski is regarded by many as the best featherweight of all time. But, according to Ilia Topuria, the UFC’s featherweight champ’s in store for another stoppage loss at UFC 297.

Topuria (14-0) has been booked to face the renowned fighter at UFC 297, which will take place on February 17th in Anaheim. The rising contender has been tapped for the opportunity on account of going 6-0 in the Octagon to date.

While speaking with UFC Espanol recently, Topuria made it clear that he sees himself crowning a new era of MMA at UFC 297 (quotes via MMA Junkie.com).

“I see myself finishing him in the first round – knockout,” Topuria said. “It’s most likely going to be a knockout unless he dives for my legs. I’m going to put his lights out.”

“…I’m part of the new generation of MMA,” the 27-year-old, Spanish resident added. “I bring an evolved style in all areas of the sport: on the feet, in the wrestling, in the grappling. I consider myself a far more complete and effective finisher than Volkanovski.”

Volkanovski (26-3) is coming off a first-round, stoppage loss to lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev in October. The 35-year-old champ’s only losses in the UFC have come against Makhachev, as in February, 2023, he lost via unanimous decision in a tightly, contested contest.

Topuria, meanwhile,  is coming off a unanimous decision win over Josh Emmett in June, 2023.
