Full Contact Fighter’s “The Daily Takedown:” At UFC on FUEL 9, Gegard Mousasi Could Emerge As Dead Strikeforce’s Most Promising Star

Gegard Mousasi

By Joshua Molina

Of all the Strikeforce fighters who have debuted or will debut in the UFC, a man by the name of Gegard Mousasi is perhap’s the most intriguing.

Mousasi, the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, will fight Alexander Gustafsson April 6 on Fuel.

The Dutch-Armemian is a graceful, yet wickedly dangerous. He’s quick as a cat, methodical like a crouching tiger and attacks like a cobra.

Mousasi submitted Mike Kyle in the first round at Strikeforce’s final show Jan. 12. Even though he’s fought all over the world, including a run as DREAM light heavyweight champion in Japan, Mousasi will finally make his UFC debut.

At 33-3, and never being knocked out, Mousasi is probably the greatest active fighter in the world to never have fought in the UFC.

He’s won six straight, and by his own admission, never really trained hard for a fight in his life, besides the most recent win over Kyle.

He’s that good.

With 18 wins by knockout, 11 by submission and only four by decision, Mousasi, unlike a Georges St-Pierre, is a finisher.

Mousasi will have plenty of submission opportunities against the massive, 6 foot, 5 inch tall Gustafsson, who himself is coming off six straight wins.

This won’t be an overhyped affair that doesn’t deliver. In fact, it’s underhyped fight that will probably overdeliver,

If Gustafsson wins, he’ll probably get a title shot against Jon Jones. Mousasi will get a shot at the gold if he wins super impressively, otherwise he may have to win again before getting a title shot, since he’s new to the UFC.

Once UFC brass sees Mousasi in the cage, they will probably fast-track him toward the title shot.

If anybody out there in the light heavyweight division has a legitimate shot at defeating Jones, it’s Mousasi, who, along with Luke Rockhold, Daniel Cormier and Gilbert Melendez, are top guys who could be wearing UFC gold a year from now.
