Full Contact Fighter’s “The Daily Takedown:” Daniel Cormier Should Stop Being Cain Velasquez’s Cheerleader

Daniel Cormier

By Joshua Molina

So Daniel Cormier said in a recently published report that only Junior Dos Santos can beat Cain Velasquez.

That’s great, DC. But you are a fighter, not a cheerleader. We’d rather hear you say you could be Velasquez, but you never want to fight your friend.

. . . Too many potentially good fights have been quashed because fighters don’t want to fight each other. When a fight makes sense, nothing should stand in its way. This is a sport afterall, not a back alley brawl, and professionals should fight for each other if it makes sense in the bigger picture for the sport.

Here’s a look at some fights among friends that we’d like to see before it’s too late.

Daniel Cormier vs. Cain Velasquez: Let’s get it on! This is a dream fight that isn’t happening because these guys are controlling UFC President Dana White. Cormier is the Strikeforce Grand Prix champion. Velasquez is the two-time UFC champion. Let’s “merge” the titles and see who is pound-for-pound the best heavyweight in the world. What’s DC’s plan? Just hang out until Velasquez loses?

Rory MacDonald vs. Georges St-Pierre: These guys are Canadian and also training buddies. The reality is that MacDonald might be the second best welterweight in the world. This is a fight that would be explosive because of the fighters’ styles. GSP is nearing the end of his career, while MacDonald has not yet hit his prime. MacDonald’s stalker style matched with GSP defensive and takedown ability would likely mean a fight where at least one of the fighter’s would have to come out of their comfort zone to win the fight.

Nick Diaz vs. Jake Shields: Although no one is really pining for a Jake Shields fight, it would be intriguing to see how these two would tangle. Both have great Jiu-Jitsu skills, and, for a time, both were two of the top fighters in the world. Could Diaz grapple with Shields? Could Shields stand with the Diaz? This is another good fight that we woudl probably never see happen.
