Full Contact Fighter’s “The Daily Takedown”: Girls Night Out? Not at UFC 168

Sometimes a delicious piece of cake can be just too sweet.

And that’s the case with UFC 168.

Originally headlined by Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate for the UFC women’s bantamweight championship, the women got bumped to co-main event status when UFC President Dana White booked Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman II on the same night.

That’s a good way to lose about 400,000 pay-per-view buys. If you are a UFC fan, you are going to find a way to watch the Silva/Weidman rematch.

Booking Rousey/Tate the same night only consolidates your fan base, not expands it. You could book Jon Jones vs. Cain Velasquez on the same night as Weidman vs. Silva and you would not significantly boost your pay-per-view buy rate.

There’s only so many UFC fans to go around.

No one’s going to say, “Silva is fighting Weidman again tonight? Nah, I don’t want to watch that. Oh, Ronda Rousey is fighting Miesha Tate? Oh, I am gonna order the pay-per-view now!”

By putting Rousey vs. Tate on the undercard, the UFC is giving millions of dollars way. No matter what the company says, it can’t promote the two big fights equally under the same banner as it could with separate shows.

Fans and female fighters deserve their own main event. If Rousey vs. Liz Carmouche was a big deal, Rousey vs. Tate will blow the roof off the skydome.

Now the women will undoubtedly get lost in the shuffle, and the UFC will lose because of it.

White should move the Rousey/Tate fight to Super Bowl weekend. With proper promotion, the female fighters could draw 600,000 pay-per-view buys and create one of the best main events of all time.

Tate nearly cut off her own arm and gave it to Rousey to avoid tapping out that night. Rousey vs. Tate should be equally as intense.

Let the women have their own night. Men already headline all the other pay-per-views.
