Full Contact Fighter’s “The Daily Takedown”: “King Mo” Will Need to Wrestle “The Silverback” if he Expects to Reign Again

It’s D-Day for “King Mo” Lawal. He needs to win.Tonight the former Strikeforce Light-Heavyweight champion faces stiff competition in Seth Petruzelli, a bigger man who famously KO’d Kimbo Slice in 14 seconds on CBS national television.

King Mo has been KO’d twice already. A third time won’t advance his MMA future. King Mo’s plan is simple: take Petruzelli down and wrestle him. Mo needs a win, so it’s OK if he grinds him down for three rounds and gets back in the win column.

Nothing helps with confidence like a victory.

. . . The bill to legalize MMA in New York has died again. Say what you will about Dana White and the UFC, but it’s embarrassing that New York won’t allow MMA. It’s all politics and the Las Vegas Culinary Union is behind the blockage.

The Culinary Workers Union Local 226 has been fighting and failing to unionize workers at the Fertitta brothers’ chain of hotels-casinos they own in Las Vegas.

The union has waged a wicked battle against the UFC’s attempt to legalize MMA in New York.

One day, probably next year, New York lawmakers will see the light and legalize MMA. And when that happens UFC will probably stage the biggest, most lucrative fight card in MMA history, and the culinary union will have to eat it.

. . . Nick Diaz’s WAR promotion starts June 22 in Stockton, California. And don’t call it cagefighting. Diaz’s promotion will use typical boxing style ropes. Diaz will stream the event live for free on the internet.

Let’s hope Diaz’s promotion is a successful, but let’s also hope he recaptures his fire and makes his return to the MMA, in a cage or not, soon. He’s too young to retire.
