Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi

Injuries have wrecked another high-profile matchup in the UFC.

Now the original Ultimate Fighter icon Forrest Griffin is out against Phil Davis.

Griffin tore his ACL.

Griffin may not be a big star anymore, but he gave viewers another reason to buy UFC 155. He’s a well-known name and his injury is a blow to the show.

It is unknown whether Davis will get a replacement fighter – or if he will be pulled from the show. If the UFC is daring, it could pull light heavyweight Gegard Mousasi from the Jan. 12 Strikeforce card and have him step in against Davis.

That matchup would certainly add drama to the show.

The card is headlined by Heavyweight Champ Junior Dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez, a big main event, so it’s not the end of the world for the UFC, but it is a another significant blow to a thin roster, in a year wrecked by injuries.

Fans don’t like to feel disappointed and it’s happened frequently this year. Middleweight contender Chris Weidman was already also knocked off the show with an injury.

Let’s hope, for the UFC’s sake, Velasquez or Dos Santos don’t get injured between now and Dec. 29, because right now, UFC 155 is a one-match show.

Speaking of the light heavyweight division, all eyes are on Strikeforce’s Daniel Cormier.
That’s because Strikeforce Grand Prix Champion Cormier could become the UFC’s equivalent of Evander Holyfield by this time next year.

Holyfield, of course, was the Olympic Bronze medalist who won the light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight championships before becoming a 5-time heavyweight champion.

Cormier is a decorated NCAA Division I All-American wrestler who is 10-O in MMA. The American Kickboxing Academy-trained fighter has emerged as one of the hottest prospects in MMA.

Cormier’s situation is unique because at 5 foot 11, he’s a guy who can drop to 205 pounds and fight as a light heavyweight or stay at 238 and fight at heavyweight.

But light heavyweight may be the only division, right now, for Cormier.

The problem is that he won’t fight his AKA brother Velasquez, should Velasquez defeat Dos Santos.

Could Cormier be the guy to unsolve the Jon Jones riddle?
