Georges St. Pierre relayed after his win over Johny Hendricks last month that he needs to step away from fighting for a while, and today the renowned fighter announced he’s vacated the UFC Welterweight Championship.

After St. Pierre left the call to attend a follow up news conference in Quebec City, UFC President Dana White announced that Johny Hendricks will fight Robbie Lawler for the vacant title March 15th. The bout will take place at UFC 171, which will take place in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center.

St. Pierre repeated during the call that he’s dealing with some personal issues, but did not offer any details as to what they are. The 32 year-old also noted on several occasions that the pressure of fighting and being the champion has become too much, and that he needs to step away for his mental well being.

The renowned fighter remained non-comital as to whether he will fight again, however, St. Pierre did say a comeback is possible. The Tristar fighter also insisted that he’s “100%” healthy physically.
