Golden Glory’s Bas Boon Wishes Alistair Overeem Well, Hopes No Legal Action Necessary Over Split

By Kelsey Mowatt

Following a post on the official Twitter account of Alistair Overeem, where the decorated fighter announced that he has split from his long time management team Golden Glory, the company has confirmed with FCF that indeed Overeem has moved on.

Earlier today Overeem ‘tweeted’ the following statement.

I would like to make a statement regarding the recent news of the separation from my long-time management Golden Glory. As with any relationship, there are good times and bad times – you have your common ground and your differences. As with any relationship, you have trust. When differences lead to a breach of trust, there’s no turning back and no way to continue a positive, working relationship. I don’t air my dirty laundry. I would appreciate the respect regarding my privacy to not disclose any further details on this matter.

Again, I would like to thank team Golden Glory for all the years we worked together and wish them success for the future.

When contacted by FCF, Golden Glory manager Bas Boon confirmed Overeem’s departure by stating that “We regret that 12 years of working together and friendship has come to an end.”

Boon noted that he could not really comment any further, as he is not fully aware of all the details surrounding Overeem’s decision, but like the Dutch heavyweight, added “We don’t air our dirty laundry.”

Boon reportedly hinted in a MMA Junkie story that “a judge” could rule on an apparent dispute Golden Glory and Overeem are having regarding the division of “certain percentages.” In his correspondence with FCF, Boon stated that as long as the management contract that is in place “is honored”, Golden Glory is “fine” with Overeem’s decision.

When asked a follow up regarding the MMA Junkie report and his comments regarding possible legal action, Boon said “I don’t know; I sure hope not” and that nothing’s “concrete.”

Boon also wished Overeem “much success” in his future endeavours, and furthered “He will be missed by Golden Glory, but on a personal note, we have no problems.”

News of the split comes just days removed from Overeem signing a multi-fight and exclusive contract with the UFC, which will see him fight former champion Brock Lesnar on December 30th.

At the time, the signing caught some observers off guard, as shortly before the agreement’s announcement, Zuffa had released several Golden Glory fighters from both the UFC and Strikeforce rosters due a reported dispute on how the company’s fighters collect their pay.

Other notable MMA competitors still managed by Golden Glory include Sergei Kharitonov, Marloes Coenen, Jon Olav Einemo, and Siyar Bahadurzada amongst many others.
